Whether you are looking for a church, reconnecting with your faith, or new to Arnprior, to Anglicanism, or to the whole idea of Christ and his church, we welcome you to Emmanuel. There is a Beginner’s Guide to Anglicanism in the Links section. Here are a few things that you find helpful.
Some Words and Terms we use in the Anglican Church
Eucharist is a Greek word that means “Thanksgiving”. Every celebration of the Eucharist is an act of thanksgiving to God for our salvation in Christ through his death and resurrection. The prayer over the bread and wine is called the Eucharistic Prayer and
begins with the words “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God”.
Liturgy is a word that describes the church service in which all participate. In our Eucharistic Liturgy we hear and respond to the Word of God in Scripture and gather at the Lord’s Table or Altar for Communion. It is a Greek word meaning “public duty” or “the people’s work”. Both of these words come to us from the early Christian Church.
Order of Service
At Emmanuel, we use the Book of Alternative Services (BAS) for all services, supplemented by a printed bulletin that contains all you need to follow and take part. On Sundays, both services are celebrations of Holy Eucharist. At the 8 o’clock service the liturgy is said; at the 10 o’clock much of it is sung. Our approach to the liturgy emphasizes the congregation participating in words and music as we celebrate the Word and the Table. The hymns are found in the new Hymn Book (Common Praise) of the Anglican Church of Canada. Everyone is welcome to receive Holy Communion.
Common Praise, Hymn Book
Music
We praise the Lord in song and have a variety of hymns along with sung parts of the Liturgy. If you attend the 10 o’clock Eucharist on Sunday you will hear our choir, along with our fine, historic organ. Hymn numbers are shown in the bulletin, as well as on a board at the right front of the church. If you like to sing, you may want to consider joining the choir.
Families
Families including children of all ages are welcomed at all services. In addition we offer a fun Sunday morning learning program for children ages 4 and up and a supervised nursery for children up to age 4.
Sunday School
M.E.S.S. (My Emmanuel Sunday School) meets from September to June in the church hall at 9:45, the children and youth joining the 10 o’clock service in time for Communion. Enter via the church hall entrance, to the left of the main porch, then turn left.
Nursery
A supervised nursery is available from September to June for infants and children under the age of four whose parents are attending the 10 o’clock service. Enter via the church hall entrance, to the left of the main porch, and continue to the end of the corridor. From inside the church, take the door at the left front, pass through the office and turn right.
Wheelchair Access
The church is accessible via the church hall entrance, to the left of the main porch. The
hall entrance has an automatic door. Once inside, go through the doorway on the right, then straight ahead into the nave. You should find a BAS and bulletin on the front pew. If not, you will need to get them from one of the greeters, who are at the back of the church. Since there is no ramp to the altar rail, the priest will bring the Sacrament to your pew on request. Further alterations to improve accessibility are planned for this year.
Fellowship on Sundays
A Coffee Hour, including food such as baked goods and fruit, follows the Sunday 10 o’clock service in the church hall and all are invited to join us.
